Graduation Information 2016



Graduation will be held rain or shine on June 11th at 10:00am.  Weather permitting the outdoor ceremony will be in Bulldog Stadium.  If it rains we will hold the ceremony in the Gymnasium.  The BHS website will be our primary source for disseminating information regarding the location of the ceremony.
The following information pertains to a 10:00am outdoor graduation
•       Each senior will be given one parking pass for the upper lot that they can use either for
        themselves or for their family.  There will be spots reserved for our handicapped guests l
        located next to the concession stand.
•       The parking and Stadium lot will open at 7:30 sharp.
•       Seniors will need to be in the high school by 8:45.
•       Seating will be first come first serve.
•       No tickets are necessary for an outside event.
•       All guests are asked to be seated by 9:45.
•       The Theater will be open for those choosing to watch the graduation streamed into the
         Theater. (FYI the Theater is air-conditioned, and no ticket will be required)
•       The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours.
•       A professional photographer will take pictures of each graduate receiving their diploma.
•       We ask that all guests remained seated for the entire graduation ceremony.
•       Graduates will receive their diplomas from their Advisors.  The distribution of the
        diplomas will be determined by their advisors last name.  

The following information pertains to a rain event at 10:00am.
•       The parking lot will open at 7:30 sharp
•       Seniors will need to report to the main office by 8:45
•       Tickets are required for this event.  Each senior will be given 8 tickets at the rehearsal
         on June 10th, (6 tickets for the Gymnasium and 2 for the Theater).
•       Everyone is asked to be in your seats by 9:45.
•       We ask that all guests remained seated for the entire graduation ceremony.
•       Graduates will receive their diplomas from their Advisors.  The distribution of the
        diplomas will be determined by their advisors last name.


Parking Information
     Upper Parking Lot Opens at 7:30am and closes at 9:00am sharp
     Only people with approved parking passes are allowed to park in the upper lot.
     Seniors (1 each), VIP, Handicap Parking (must have handicap tag), and Faculty   
     Lower Campus is open on a first come, first serve basis

Hall of Fame
We are developing a Bedford High School Hall of Fame program.  The intent of the program is to recognize and honor alumni of the Bedford School District and/or individuals associated with the Bedford School District who have made a significant contribution to the school or society in general through their induction into the Bedford Hall of Fame.  An Oversight Committee is being formed and we are looking for three alumni of the Bedford School District (this includes Bedford residents who attended West High) and two “at large” Bedford residents.  I have attached the By-Laws and the Application documents for a little more detail regarding committee responsibilities for your review.  If you are interested please contact me via email athagenw@sau25.net

Risky Business Why Adolescents Love Risk-Taking, and How We Can Help Manage It

110 mph on the highway, music blaring, open containers, four teens in the car…why do adolescents find drinking alcohol and engaging in high-risk behaviors so attractive?  Recent research on the adolescent brain clearly demonstrates that adolescents perceive and process risk assessment in ways that are remarkably unlike adults.  Changes in receptor site numbers and sensitivity, neurotransmitter action, and social-emotional responses all combine to influence how teens evaluate risk.  In this program, Mr. Nerney will offer new ways to think about and talk about adolescent risk reduction, including access to structured risk taking, and the use of “gist” language.  These concepts can be applied across the spectrum of adolescent risky behaviors, including drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, and others.


Mr. Nerney is the former Director of the Training Institute of Narcotic and Drug Research, Inc. (NDRI).  He has been a consultant for two of the major television networks and most recently appeared on the ABC program “20/20”.   He is an internationally known lecturer, and has served as consultant to a number of federal and state agencies, including the federal Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and the Bureau of Justice Assistance; the New York State Education Department, Department of Social Services, Division for Youth, Department of Correctional Services, Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, Division of Parole, Division of Criminal Justice Services, Capital Defender's Office and Governor's Office of Employee Relations.  Mr. Nerney has provided consultation on drug courts and other areas of technical assistance to correctional systems across the country, including the states of California, Texas, Alabama, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Oregon.  He is the father of four children.

Community Senator Needed
I am looking for a community member or parent to serve on the Community Senate for a two year term starting in September.  Janie Redman will be stepping down after fulfilling her two year term.  Applications will be accepted through the end of the month and the Senate will select the new Senator at their June meeting.  If you are interested, please apply here.  If you’d like more information, feel free to speak to any of theCommunity Senators.

IB Students: IB results will be available via the Candidates.ibo.org website from July 6th, 2016. Transcripts can be requested through that forum.  Candidates will need their login information.

Four Way Stops on County Road to Continue
​T​he intersections at Nashua Road and County Road in front of Bedford High School and
​at​ Liberty Hill Road and County Road in front of McKelvie School
​will remain 4-way stop intersections
​ through the end of the school year.  On May 25, Bedford
Police Department met with the school district, the
Department of Public Works and our engineering consultant
​and decided to extend the temporary change.  More information can be found at the Bedford Police Department website.

Tree Clearing and Other Summer Construction Projects
The Bedford School District completes significant maintenance projects every summer.   McKelvie is having an older section of roof replaced and getting an upgrade to two student bathrooms in need of replacement.  At Peter Woodbury, the parking lot is being replaced and traffic flow is being reconfigured.  You may notice this project in late June or early July when the trees in front of Peter Woodbury are removed to make way for the expanded parking lot.

Friends of Aine Kid’s Try-athlon - August 14, 2016
Registration is now open for the 4th Annual
​​Friends of Aine Kid’s Try-athlon to be held on Sunday, August 14, 2016. The only event of its kind in the area, the kid’s try-athlon is designed specifically for children ages 4-15 years, in memory of Aine Phillips, who was a student at Riddle Brook School. Beginning at the Bedford town pool and ending at the Bedford High School, participants ages 4-10 years will swim 25 yards, run 1/2 mile and bike 1 mile. Older participants ages 11-15 will swim 50 yards, run 1 mile and bike 2 miles. Official race times for all participants are recorded by Millennium Running. At the finish line, families are invited to enjoy music, a jump rope event, face painting, concessions, raffle prizes and more! The Friends of Aine Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and was established in Aine’s memory to help grieving children. This spring the PTG is having a FUND RAISER to raffle off two parking spaces in the row closest to the front door of the high school.
-The raffle is open to rising juniors and rising seniors ONLY
-One parking space will be won by a rising senior and the other will be won by a rising junior.
-The drawing will take place in early June
-If the winning rising senior has already paid for a parking space, THEIR MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED
-tickets are $25.00 each
PTG will be selling the raffle tickets during high school sporting events, concerts, and online through PayPal. More details on how to use Paypal to buy your raffle tickets will be forthcoming.
We hope you will purchase a raffle ticket and support the efforts of PTG. The PTG sponsors many of the activities our children and their teachers have come to enjoy such as: Great Artist Series, Stand By Me, Winter Reading Night, Teacher Appreciation Week and Senior Barbeque just to name just a few.

From the Principal:

Good Afternoon!
Due to the unfortunate event of last week (evacuation of our campus) we felt it prudent to reschedule the 8th Grade Parent Information Night (May 19) at the high school to May 25th.  I would like to apologize to those parents who have children in both the 8th grade and at McKelvie as I realize both evenings are important and you may have to make a decision where to spend your time.  Given the high school schedule of events it was the only available night that we could reschedule.  We will post the slide presentation on the BHS website for those parents unable to attend the rescheduled high school presentation.   If you still have questions regarding the slide presentation feel free to call the counseling department for clarification.  

Eighth Grade Parents!
On Wednesday, May 25th, at 6pm in the BHS theater we are holding our Eighth Grade Parent Information Night.  This an opportunity to hear about, and gain a better understanding of the transition your sons and daughters will be making as they make their way from the middle school to the high school.

As a reminder, we have a few NEW enrichment courses this summer (Creative Writing, Public Presentations, Intro to Statistics Hybrid, Intro to Computer Programming Hybrid). The deadline to register is May 15th. At that point, we will determine which courses will run.

From the Deans:
Parents of French students!  Our first parent information night for our French sister school exchange is Tuesday, May 17th at 6pm in room 136/139.  As your son or daughter may have told you, BHS is partnering with a school in Vernon, France to create a sister-school exchange program.  The school is Establishment Saint-Adjutor and can be found here on Google maps. We anticipate the French students coming to BHS this Fall and our students going to France during next year’s Intersession and April vacation.  Please join us on Tuesday if you can.
Earn Math credit this summer!  See the high school summer school webpage and sign up by May 15.  Enrollment in courses that run will be based on available seats after that date.

English Summer Enrichment
The deadline is approaching. Don’t miss out! The Humanities Department will be offering two additional opportunities for students to take courses and earn credit over the summer. If enough students sign up, we will offer a section of Creative Writing and a section of Public Presentations during the summer school session in July. Please see the Counseling page on the website or follow this link for more information. If a student has requested one of these courses for next year and chooses to enroll over the summer, the course will be deleted from the student’s schedule for next year, creating an open spot for either Managed Time or another elective with open seats. Remember that the summer course will only run if enough students register. Register by the May 15th deadline to secure your spot. After that, students will be enrolled in the course only if a seat remains available.
IB Students: Any student who tested during the May 2016 testing session can have their results sent to colleges for free by filling out the “Request for Results Services” form on the IB at BHS website under the May 2016 Testing Information tab.  At this time, BHS can send results to one school free of charge.  This information is due May 30th.  Any requests done after that done will be done through candidates.ibo.org and incur a fee.  If there are questions, please contact Mr. Mezeske via email (mezeskea@bedfordnhk12.net) .

Dear Parents, Staff and Student Drivers,
I want to make sure our whole community is aware of a temporary traffic change.  This important announcement is from the Bedford Police Department:   
Starting Monday, May 16th, and continuing through Friday, May 27th, the intersection at Nashua Road and County Road in front of Bedford High School will become a temporary 4-way stop intersection. In addition, on those same dates, the intersection of Liberty Hill Road and County Road in front of McKelvie School will also become a temporary 4-way stop intersection.
The Bedford Highway Safety Committee has been studying both of these intersections after hearing from you – the community – regarding traffic delays and crashes at both of these intersections.  As a result, the Highway Safety Committee recommended engineering studies of both intersections to explore solutions to both congestion and crashes.
Part of the plan to improve both intersections includes a study of solutions, including 4-way stops.~ As you know, both intersections are currently 2-way stops.
For that two week period, temporary 4-way stop signs and traffic controls will be placed at both of these intersections.
Please review the rules of the road for 4-way stop intersections.  If you have a youth operator in your household that drives to school or frequently transits either of these intersections, please take a few moments to discuss the rules of road when approaching and driving through a 4-way stop intersection.
First and most important – all traffic must come to a complete stop.  This includes traffic that is in a designated right turn only lane which must come to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection.
Second, the person in the intersection or whoever arrives first at an empty intersection has the right-of-way.  If two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right always has the right-of-way.
To learn more about the rules of the road at 4-way stop intersections, go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at www.nhtsa.gov and search for right of way at intersections.

Hello Parents,
This spring the PTG is having a FUND RAISER to raffle off two parking spaces in the row closest to the front door of the high school.
-The raffle is open to rising juniors and rising seniors ONLY
-One parking space will be won by a rising senior and the other will be won by a rising junior.
-The drawing will take place in early June
-If the winning rising senior has already paid for a parking space, THEIR MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED
-tickets are $25.00 each
PTG will be selling the raffle tickets during high school sporting events, concerts, and online through PayPal. More details on how to use Paypal to buy your raffle tickets will be forthcoming.
We hope you will purchase a raffle ticket and support the efforts of PTG. The PTG sponsors many of the activities our children and their teachers have come to enjoy such as: Great Artist Series, Stand By Me, Winter Reading Night, Teacher Appreciation Week and Senior Barbeque just to name just a few.
