BHS News

From the Principal:
We have been hard at work reviewing feedback and discussing the next iteration of competency recovery at BHS.  The most important aspect of competency recovery has been providing instruction in a smaller setting to students who are struggling.  To that end, we have been working on how to improve upon last year’s model.  I hope to report on our direction in next week’s notes.  
Important Dates and Events:
Picture retake day is October 18th from 9-11. Senior quick pics will be this day too.  
All senior portrait photo choices must be made and submitted to Hockmeyer by September 30th.

From the Counseling Department:
SENIORS- The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) becomes available tomorrow- October 1st. This is a big change from previous years when this process began on January 1st. PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualification Test FALL 2016 INFORMATION!
The PSAT/NMSQT administration has moved back to a Saturday test date!
The date for this year's test is Saturday October 15th, please arrive at 7:45, test will take place from 8-noon(approximate). Students can sign up in the COUNSELING OFFICE. Fee is $25 made payable to Bedford High School.

We encourage our 10th and 11th graders to take part! Questions? Email the site supervisor Jessica Croft atcroftj@sau25.net

Yearbooks are on sale now for the lowest price of the year. Buy by 10/28/2016 with personalization to receive 4 free icons on the cover. Visit the library website for more yearbook information.
If you made a level change, please return the textbooks you no longer need to the library.

From the IB Coordinator:
IB Exam Registration begins Friday Sept. 30 and runs through Friday October 21.  Registration information including the school policies regarding IB exams, registration instructions, cost and payment information, and FAQs can all be found on the Registration Letter.  Links to the Registration Form, the Exam Schedule, and other pertinent documents can be found on the IB at BHS website under the “Exam Information” tab.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jon Cannon, IB Coordinator at cannonj@sau25.net.

From the Deans:
The Art department will have student art highlighted at the Deerfield Fair September 29-October 2.
We invite you to support and explore our very own art teacher, artist Catherine Tuttle’s, work. A showing of her work will be at the McGowan Fine Art Gallery in Concord. Hikes and Travels is open from October 11-November 11, 2016.
Student Activities:
Tryouts for the Talent Show are next week, October 4th and 5th. The Talent Show is in early December.
The marching band is holding its third annual mattress sale fundraiser on October 9th from 10am-4pm. They offer name brand twin, full, queen, and king size mattresses, pillow top, orthopedic, latex & gel memory foam sets, pillows, and adjustable beds. If you are in the market, come on down and support the BHS band.

In Sports:

Bedford High School Athletic Department received the NHIAA Sportsmanship Award for 2015-16!  Annually, one school from each Division is presented this award for recognition of demonstrating a high degree of sportsmanship throughout every season during home and away athletic contests.  This is a great honor because we receive report grading from our opponents.

WINTER sports announcement:  In preparation to for the Winter Sports season Eric Gelinas, our Athletic Trainer with Safe Sports Network is offering an option for BHS Winter Athletes (except Indoor Track) to take their mandatory C3logix test, which is the balance test portion that is additionally required now for athletes to take.  Athletes that participated last Spring (except Outdoor Track) and who are participating in sports this Fall (except Cross Country) have already taken their balance test do not need to sign up.   Click this link:https://goo.gl/d3XmKw

Safe Sports Network is again hosting their annual FREE sports physicals event. This year it will be onNovember 16 at the NH Orthopaedic Center in Bedford, NH. The event will run from 5:30pm-7:00pm. We ask that participants RSVP ahead of time. They can sign up using this link: https://goo.gl/rRrDjF  Walk-ins are also welcomed, just print off the form and bring it with you.

Watercolor Painting: “A Brush with Kevin Dadoly”  Instructor: Kevin Dadoly Starting 9/28 Wednesdays 6pm-8pm Cost: $110 + $25 materials fee
This watercolor class is designed to offer something for everyone, from the exhibiting artist to the very beginner!  Each week students will explore techniques that reveal the exciting options watercolor can provide. The class environment is positive and fun, and is all about developing your personal style as an artist!  If you have ever wanted to try painting, or if you are an artist that needs motivation and a challenge, this class is for you. It is also a great night out!
Course Updates:
Due to low enrollment, Ceramics and Italian have both been cancelled. Please continue to check the Community Education website for registration information and new course descriptions!

Help the PTG continue to bring exciting programs to our school, for instance at BHS an all school presentation by Chris Herren, who will educate students on the dangers of substance abuse.  Programs like this cannot happen without support from parents and teachers in the Bedford community. YOU’RE INVITED to join the PTG at Shorty’s in Bedford on Thursday, October 6th! On the first Thursday of every month the Bedford PTG will receive 15% of all sales, beverages included, dine in or take out, all day long. Simply print or show them this flyer or just let them know to give a copy of your receipt to the hostess.

Are you interested in volunteering at BHS? Some events we need help with are Teacher appreciation events (bake or buy), Art room help, surprise treat days (next up, surprise cookie day), Senior Banquet and Senior BBQ.
