BHS News

Intersession
Intersession begins on Wednesday next week.  Students can access the Intersession website to find out the rooms they need to report to during intersession.

On-Campus Activities and Day Trips run the regular school day.  Students are expected to be at BHS from 7:55 to 2:35. The only variations to that would be earlier departure times or later dismissal times.  That information would have been given out during the Mandatory Intersession Meetings. Students can check the website, as well.
Buses will run as usual during intersession.
A reminder to all parents; Students attending on-campus activities may not leave campus for any reason.  Breakfast and lunch will be available in the Commons.

AP Pre- Registration
This Tuesday the 21st we will administer the AP Pre-registration in the Commons during Advisory. All students who have chosen to take an AP exam(s) must attend. Please go directly to the Commons for 9:21 and the Counseling Office will cover attendance.

IB and AP Testing

BHS News Update

NEASC UPDATE:

The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (N.E.A.S.C.) is the accrediting agency for high schools (and colleges/universities) in the northeast.  The Association’s purpose is to  assess member schools against a set of twenty-first century standards in order to evaluate the extent to which a school is providing a relevant and rigorous learning experience for our students.
Bedford High School is being evaluated by NEASC.  We began the first step in the process last year.  Every staff member was assigned to one of seven committees correlating with the seven standards being measured.  Each committee was charged with “self-assessing” how we are meeting each of the standards, providing evidence of such, and creating written reports with respect to compliance.  We were also charged with identifying our strengths and areas in need of improvement.  This phase of the process has been ongoing for more than a year.  At this time the draft report is complete.  A final report will be sent to NEASC for review in June.
Phase two in the process involves a visiting team (consisting of 16 educators) coming to Bedford High for three days in September. The visiting team’s charge will be to evaluate the substance of our report against the NEASC standards by looking at evidence, attending classes, talking with students, teachers. parents and administrators.  This team will provide a written assessment indicating the status of our accreditation and any commendations and recommendations for the school.
Phase three involves BHS considering any recommendations and developing a strategy to implement identified areas of growth.  Following the report, BHS is responsible to provide a two and five year follow-up progress reports.
The full accreditation process is comprehensive, occupying much of our professional meeting time and teacher time outside of their work day.  Because we are a school that believes in “pushing our comfortable limits” we have embraced the process because we believe we can and should always seek to improve the learning experience we provide for our students.

BHS NEWS

This week was a challenge for many of our juniors due to the Smarter Balanced testing.  Each junior was scheduled for two and one-half hours of testing for each of the four days.  As is typical of our students at BHS, the majority of students gave it their best effort.  I would like to thank the junior class for being the first class to take on this new state assessment and give it their best!
The May AP and IB testing schedules has been posted around the building.  IB and AP students can check the schedules for date, time and location.  The link below will take you to the schedule.  A reminder; students are expected to be at school in classes before and after testing.

Absenteeism:
Just a reminder; please call into the school when your son or daughter will be absent.

Assassins Game:  The students have decided to cancel the game of Assassins this year.  As is typical with Bedford kids, I have been told the students agreed the proceeds paid to play the game have been slated to go to a specific charity rather than be returned.  We have great kids!

Website Changes Coming!
You will notice that our school website will have a different look in May. We are transitioning to a look that will be more appealing and easier to navigate. Stay tuned for more info as the date approaches but wanted to give you the heads up.

Alert Parents of Freshman and Sophomores!
As part of a graduation requirement, all students earn a ½ credit for their digital portfolio. Digital Portfolio is not an actual course that students take, however over the course of the four years, students must meet requirements to earn the ½ credit. Starting with the Sophomore class (class of 2017 and including Freshmen class), all students must have a minimum of 4 uploaded projects in their portfolio each year. If these four uploads are not completed, students must attend summer school. The deadline for these uploads is May 29, 2015. These projects are not additional projects completed outside of their classes. Students are asked to pick four projects that they have done over the course of the year that they are most proud of to highlight and verify the technology standards that the state requires. More information about this process can be found online at linkyy.com/bhspow (BHS Portfolio of Work website link can be found under the student tab on BHS website). Support is provided on the website to help guide students and students can also seek assistance from the tech department.

Parents of Seniors
Real World Learning Hours and Digital Portfolio are graduation requirements and must be complete by May 29th. Seniors who have not completed these requirements will not be able to graduate.

Don't forget to e-mail or snail mail your senior's baby picture to Katie Orrego (orregok@sau25.net) by May 4th!  We are going to include them in a senior slideshow during Senior Week.  We'll be happy to return any pictures you send in!
