IMPORTANT CORRECTION REGARDING CHROMEBOOKS

Dear Parents of our current eighth and ninth graders,

The Bedford School Board has approved a Chromebook Program for the District.  Starting in the fall of 2015, all students in grade 9 and 10 will need to have a Chromebook computer for use at school.  In May, we will send you more details about this program.  However, some of you may want to purchase a Chromebook sooner.

We believe this program is a tremendous opportunity for our students and teachers to improve teaching and learning.  We have developed a set of frequently asked questions that can be viewed here.
Parents will have three options to purchase a Chromebook:
  • Purchase a Chromebook yourself.
  • Starting in the spring of 2015, buy directly from the district with a one-time payment.
  • Starting in the spring of 2015, lease directly from the district with an annual payment.
If you choose not to opt into the program, we will provide your child with a loaner device during the school day. It will need to be checked in and out daily and must stay at school.
If so, please note that any Chromebook model will be compatible with the District’s program.   That said, we do have some recommendations.
  • 11.6 inch screen size (as opposed to 13 or 14 inches). The smaller size fits nicely in student backpacks.
  • 4GB memory (as opposed to 2GB).
  • Intel Celeron Processor (also known as the Haswell).
The Bedford School District has been pleased with the design and performance of the Acer Chromebook C720 and the Acer Chromebook 13.  Other manufacturers such as HP, Toshiba and Samsung also have recently released new models with similar specifications.  You can expect to spend between $250 and $300.

We are sure parents will have questions going forward. Many of them have been answered in the frequently asked questions.  Others, related to the district purchase plan, student set up, and implementation plan, will be answered in the spring.  In the meantime, we wanted to get you these specifications in case you want to make a purchase for the holidays.

Feel free to contact us with questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Bill Hagen, Principal Bedford High School
Ed Joyce, Principal Ross Lurgio School
Terry Bullard, Technology Director
Chip McGee, Superintendent of Schools
