BHS: Fall SAT & PSAT Dates

PSAT sign ups are going on in the Counseling office through Oct 15th.  The test date is Saturday, October 18th, from 8-12. You are asked to arrive to the test site by 7:45am.  The test fee is $25 payable in cash or by check made payable to BHS.  For questions email croftj@sau25.net

The SAT’s are administered here at BHS the first Saturday in October & November.  To register visit collegeboard.org. Seating is limited so reserve now!

BHS News

Friday Night Football!

Bedford athletics will introduce an opportunity for fans to donate to our athletic program at all home football games this year. Proceeds from donations will go toward the upgrading of Weight/Cardio Room equipment.  The Weight/cardio facility is accessible to all students during school time through their Wellness classes, and after school to all athletes in and out of season.  A table located close to the Concession Stand will be identified by a donation poster.  As always, there is no admission price to our games and any contribution will be greatly appreciated!  


Picture Retake Day;

Picture retake & senior quick pic day is Thursday Oct. 23beginning at 9:00 am.  Picture retakes will be held in the Theater.



Constitution Day into our curriculum this week:
 
Our humanities classes at the high school took some time to recognize Constitution Day by tying it into our current units of study. In Roots of Thought, where they are studying ancient civilizations, students looked at different forms of government in Greek city-states and compared elements of Athenian democracy with those of American democracy. Students in our American Dream classes are in the midst of discussing how the Constitution is a living document, in particular how the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were important both following the Civil War and in today's world. Additionally, our Global Studies students are reviewing aspects of American Federalism, such as the Bill of Rights, Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, and Presidential versus Parliamentary Government, and comparing those to aspects of Indian Federalism.

September 23rd, is the final day to drop or add a class for the school year.

Health Alert

The New Hampshire Division of Public Health Services has identified two human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis​ ("Triple E")​ in the state this year. They ​have asked us to remind parents to use prevention measures to avoid mosquito bites by ​wearing ​protective clothing, ​using ​insect repellents, and reducing environmental mosquito populations.  For any questions, please contact NH DHHS, DPHS, Bureau of Infectious Disease Control at 603-271-4496 (after hours 1-800-852-3345 ext.5300).

September 23, Course Add/Drop deadline
(Please be aware the September 23 Drop/Add deadline pertains to courses in both semester one and semester two.  The rationale for this is two fold; 1. to ensure the integrity of the student transcript when sending to colleges, 2. Staffing and course offerings are determined from student requests for courses.  Once courses and teacher schedules are set, changes in courses and teacher schedules are not possible. Drops from a course in a second semester create small class sizes and an ineffective use of our resources.)

BHS: Traffic on Campus

Dear Parents,

Yesterday afternoon during the Middle school dismissal a student walking in the road from the upper Middle\High school parking lot to the lower lot on Nashua Road was struck by a car.  We are grateful that, despite her injuries, she will be returning to school tomorrow. This incident and the volume of traffic on our campus during arrival and dismissal have raised concerns about the safety of students.  

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of a few important practices that help keep students safe. When transporting students to the high school, please use the high school driveway, turn left into the top parking lot and pull as far forward as possible before stopping. Please do not park and wait for students in the driveway as it prevents through traffic to the back lot and gymnasium.  I would like to remind everyone when on campus to drive carefully and adhere to the posted speed limit.  Additionally, please keep in mind student foot traffic is greatly increased around dismissal time as hundreds of students are walking to their cars and athletic fields. 

I will be meeting with student drivers to remind them of traffic patterns, posted speed limits and the need to keep a watchful eye out for pedestrians. 

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and may help to prevent another incident.

The Bedford Education Foundation is auctioning off two (2) student parking permits for the 2014-2015 school year. This is a great opportunity to ensure a parking spot throughout the school year while supporting the great work of the Foundation. BEF Wine & Spirit Tasting Fundraiser
 
The Bedford Education Foundation (BEF) is holding its annual fundraiser on FridaySeptember 26th, 7:30 – 10:30 pm
 at the Manchester Country Club. 
 
The event will feature a live and silent auction with many great items including VIP tickets to
Late Night with Seth Meyers with Green Room access.  
 
Bedford School District’s very own 
 
Michael Fournier and Molly McCarthy,
principals at Riddle Brook School and McKelvie Intermediate School respectively, will be the auctioneers. 

The BEF contributes approximately $15,000 each year through grants to teachers and administrators in support of continued excellence in Bedford schools.  It promises to be a fun evening out with friends -- all for a great cause.

Juniors and Seniors remember the parking lottery begins September 8th and ends on September 12th.  If you are interested get your paperwork into the Main Office. 

Wednesday, September 10th- Sr. College Planning Info Night at 6:00pm, geared to Seniors/Parents, but all are welcome! (Theater)
Wednesday, September 17th, College Athletic Information night at 6:00pm, in the Theater.  The evening is geared toward those interested in playing athletics at the college level.
Tuesday, September 23rd, is our Course Add/Drop deadline.  Course dropped after that date will be included on a student transcript.

BHS: Dress Code for School

Good Morning,

I am asking for your help. On the first day of school I met with each grade level.  Among the topics shared with students during each meeting was very clear language on school attire and how to judge whether the attire for school met what we believe is a reasonable standard.  We reminded them to review the dress code language in the handbook, we offered some simple ways to determine appropriateness i.e. when you put your arms at your side do you feel cloth?" If not, too short.  "Are your boxers showing? if yes, pull up pants and use a belt.  We have spent a great deal of time over these opening days giving students an opportunity to change outfits when not meeting the standard (I am always surprised by how many students have a backup out fit with them).  I certainly understand it has been very warm and humid the past few days and lighter clothes are more comfortable.  I can say with great confidence that many students have found ways to dress comfortably and still meet the dress standards.  However, given the effort has not seemed to impact the behavior, we have announced to students, beginning tomorrow, a student not meeting the reasonable standard for appropriate dress will be sent home and the day considered an unexcused absence.  The consequence of an unexcused absence means a student who is sent home will receive a zero for any work missed that day.  
Please help us to avoid this step by talking to your son or daughter (I will say this issue has been more about the girls apparel) about what they are wearing to school.

Open House September 4th, 6:00pm - 8:30PM
During the evening you will follow an abbreviated schedule of all of your son or daughter's classes.  You are asked to use Powerschool to print the schedule and bring it with you to school to follow. 
Delayed Opening September 9th:
The High School will have a delayed opening on the 9th to accommodate Tuesday's election.  School will begin for students at 9:50am.
College Information Night September 10th, 6:00 pm, Theater:
This evening is geared toward assisting parents and seniors with the college planning process.
College Athletic Information Night September 17th, 6:00 pm, Theater:
If you are interested in playing athletics at the college level, this evening will help parents and student/athletes with what they need to know now. Topics covered; Athletic Resume, Registering for the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Drop/Add Deadline September 23rd:
This is the last day students may drop or add a course. Students may do so in the counseling office.
School Store:
During Parent Open House please come visit the Bedford High School Dog Pound, the school store, where you can purchase high quality school apparel and an assortment of snacks. The students have enjoyed our small haven in the High School to such an extent that we would like you to experience it. So come and immerse yourself in our wide array of school apparel for you or for your student. We are located near the commons in C127.
Community Service Opportunity Available Thursday 9/4 
Families in Transition is gathering 279 children and teenagers together for a "I AM ONE" event on Thursday 9/4 at Manchester's Veterans Memorial Park. The festival takes place from 5 - 9 pm, students are needed from 5 - 6 pm to participate in a group activity designed to represent the 279 children served by Families in Transition in 2013. Students can report directly to Veteran's Park - please contact Emily Melhorn, Families in Transition Coordinator of Volunteers (EMelhorn@fitnh.org)

BHS: Library Hours
The school library staff is busy distributing textbooks this week so the hours of operation are from 7:30am - 3:00pm.  The library will resume its normal hours next week starting on Tuesday, September 2nd.  
Mon-Thur:  7:30am - 5:00pm   Fridays:       7:30am - 3:00pm

BHS Senior/Junior Parking Lottery will begin Monday, September 8th
The main office will start taking Campus Parking forms for the lottery on Monday, September 8th and accept them through the end of the school day Friday, September 12th.
Campus Parking forms can be found in the main office.  Please return completed form with $110.00 payment, copies of your driver’s license, and car registration.  All steps must be completed to be eligible.
**You must have a valid drivers license at the time of applying for campus parking.**

Winners will be posted online & in the main office Monday, September 15th. If you are a  lottery winner, please stop by the main office to pick up your parking permit. If you were not picked in the lottery, you will be refunded your money.


IF YOU KNOW OF A FAMILY THAT LIVES IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS:
  • In a shelter
  • In a motel or campground due to the lack of an alternative adequate accommodation
  • In a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station
  • Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship
