August 20, 2014

With the start of another school year just a few days away, the excitement is building and things are buzzing here at BHS!  Hundreds of students are involved in athletic and band camps in preparation for the fall season.  Teachers and support staff are excited to be back and begin our eighth year! Yes, eight!  It is amazing how quickly the time has passed.  Over those eight years BHS has grown tremendously and has developed into a highly respected and recognized public high school.  Although not perfect and still in growth mode, the Bedford community can take great pride in what has been accomplished during the past eight years.  And, as I say to the staff and students each year, while it’s good to be where we are, it’s not ok to stay there.

As I have in past years, I will be routinely (typically on Friday) sending home information that will be helpful for you to know.  Our school web page:  http://www.sau25.net/BedfordHigh.cfm can be your best connection to what’s happening at BHS as we post news and information daily.  Our school calendar can be viewed on the site.  Information like parent evenings, grade closing dates, and school events are posted on the calendar.  Throughout the year I will send grade specific information to you as a way to keep your inbox a little less cluttered; however, today’s email has a little for everyone.

PTG NEWS:

The Parent Teacher Group is a wonderful volunteer group of people who support all of our children in the Bedford schools.  Beyond the fundraising raising they do that sponsors may wonderful educational programming, the hundreds of volunteer hours provided to the high school make events like our Senior Project Presentations possible.  PLEASE consider becoming a member.  Your membership fee goes right back to the support educational opportunities for your children.  Look for membership information coming home on the first day with your son or daughter.  Help their Advisory win the Panera Breakfast by being the first Advisory to have more than 10 memberships returned!

Juniors/Seniors:

Late Arrival/Early Dismissal is an opportunity for juniors and seniors who meet the standards for the privilege to arrive late to school or leave early from school when they have managed time blocks.  We will review the qualifying standards with students in class meetings on the first day of school.  Once students have met the standards and are approved through their assistant principal, they must always sign in or out of school in the AP’s office.

Dress Code:

We are making excellent progress in this area due in large part to the efforts of parents and cooperation of our fantastic students!  However, there is always room for improvement.  Please take some time to review the “Dress” criteria in the Student/Parent Handbook found on pages 20 and 21.

Parking:

We will hold a fall parking pass lottery for eligible Juniors and Seniors early in September.  As we continue to increase enrollment, please keep in mind our parking resource remains static.  I wish we could provide a space on campus for every student who applied, however, this will no longer be possible.  The town continues to allow students to use the Sportsman field lot and the Little League field lot.  Students have in the past also parked on Chestnut (the access road behind the school).  Be advised that because this is an emergency road, the town has posted “No Parking” signs and will tow cars parked there.  Those students who have already secured parking passes should look for them in the mail in the next day or two.

Food Service:

Dear Parent/Guardians,
The Bedford School District Food Service program is implementing a new software system for all school lunch inquiries.  In order to access your student’s lunch account, you must create an account with sendmoneytoschool.com. This account will enable you to view student balances, transactions and allow you to deposit funds into your student’s lunch account.
For your convenience, the link to sendmoneytoschool.com is available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal (click on the Lunch Info link) and the School District Website (http://www.sau25.net - click on the Student Lunch Account quick link).
Thank you!
Sincerely,
The BSD Food Service Team
