BHS News

Transition to an electronic report card

Dear Parents,

At the end of the third quarter, Bedford High School and Lurgio Middle School will switch from paper report cards to electronic report cards. Parents will receive an email notice that the final grades for the quarter have been posted in the Powerschool Parent Portal.

We are making this change for several reasons.  It will further reduce our use of paper.  More importantly, the change allows parents, students and teachers to discuss a student’s performance based on the most up-to-date grades stored in the Parent Portal.  Unlike the old paper report card, the Parent Portal allows parents and students to “click through” students’ grades and see teacher comments, assignment descriptions, and individual assignments that comprise the grade.

As with any change, we anticipate parents and students will have questions.   If you have additional questions, please contact me at 310-9000.

Sincerely,

Bill and Ed

PS At Bedford High School, if a student has a Y5 grade, the year-long average grade, of F or NCF, this means the student is NOT currently passing the class.  This is true even if a student has a passing grade
for the most recent quarter.

PROM TICKET INFO
Recently, I have heard from some parents of Juniors and Seniors about the weekly increase cost of prom tickets.  What follows is an explanation of how the ticket pricing was determined.
The actual cost of the Prom tickets is $70 per student.  However, since the class had some funds in reserve, they are able to offer the tickets at the discounted price and as a way to motivate students to buy tickets early.  The "motivational" ticket price was $60 for the first two weeks of sales.  The price increases to $65 dollars for the next week and caps at $70 dollars until sales are closed.  (The discounted prices are less expensive than last year's prom and the $70 price is in line with last year's prom.
I hope this sheds some light on the confusing situation.

School Safety Check Program
The Bedford Police Department will begin a new program in April that will increase their presence in all Bedford Schools.  The School Safety Check Program will have each of the five day shift officers visiting each Bedford School on a monthly basis.  While at each school the officers will be able to become more familiar with the layout of each school facility, work with a school liaison to meet students and staff, and provide a greater presence in and around the school.  This new program is welcomed and embraced by the Bedford School District administration and is another example of the collaborative relationship between the Bedford School District and the Bedford Police Department.

BHS Theatre Company

Join the BHS Theatre Company for an evening of "Literary One-Acts"

On March 8th and 9th (this Friday and Saturday) the Bedford High School Theatre Company will present two one-act plays.

Darcy and Elizabeth, adapted from Austen's  Pride and Prejudice, is a lovely introduction to the beloved classic.  Students will transport you to the Regency period, where propriety, property, and marriage were essential to one's happiness. Spoiler alert: the sparkling Elizabeth Bennet and dour Mr. Darcy somehow find love by the end!

Euripides' tragedy, Trojan Women, takes place just after the Trojan War, as the women and children sit in the rubble of their ruined city, awaiting their fates. This updated version by Charles Mee replaces the original dialogue with real testimony from survivors of Hiroshima, the Holocaust, and other atrocities of war. Modern music adds another layer of relevance to the classic story; Cassandra is a punk rocker, and Helen of Troy regains her position with the Bow Wow Wow version of "I Want Candy." Come join us for a poignant, wild look at war and women.

Darcy and Elizabeth is suitable for all ages. Trojan Woman has a "PG rating," as it contains descriptions of casualties of war and other violence.

The show is March 8th and 9th at 7:00 pm. Even with intermission it will be under two hours. Tickets are available at the door, or online atwww.seatyourself.biz/bedfordhigh

Hope to see you there!--
