2012 Bedford PTG's Holiday Gift Card Fundraiser

“2 Gifts for the Price of 1”
2012 Bedford PTG’s Holiday Gift Card Fundraiser
Gift cards make the perfect gift.  Finish your holiday shopping early this year by purchasing gift cards through the Bedford PTG to provide support for the Bedford schools with no additional cost to you.  There are more than 50 retailer gift cards available.  Popular retailers include Macys, Lowe’s, Stop & Shop, Panera Bread, and Dunkin Donuts.

How does it work? For every gift card you buy, a percentage (up to 16%) of the value of the card is donated by the sponsoring retailer to our schools while 100% of the value of the card that you purchased is available for you to spend.  For example, if you purchased a $25.00 Panera Bread gift card, you will receive a $25.00 gift card and Bedford PTG will get $2.50!  Go to www.bedfordptg.org/fundraisers to download the list of participating retailers available.  Just fill out the order form and drop it off with a check to the Bedford High School main office.  If you have any questions, please contact Donna Watson at 714-5685.

District Nutrition Guidelines

Attached is a letter explaining the District position on updated nutrition guidelines.

Bedford School District
Nutritional Guidelines and Standards
Parties, Celebrations, and Meetings

The Bedford School District believes that all food available at school can make a positive contribution to students’ diet and health.  Instead of foods with minimal nutritional value, we will use healthy snack options for parties, celebrations, and meetings.  We can also chose alternatives for celebrating that do not involve food.   More information is available at www.sau25.net *Curriculum * Wellness.

Healthy Options for Shared Snacks
·      We will choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat milk and milk products, lactose-free and soy beverages or foods made from them.
·      If we choose packaged foods, we will follow these standards for each portion:
o      Less than 200 calories;
o      Less than 35% of total calories from fat;
o      Less than 10% of calories from saturated fats;
o      Zero trans fat;
o      Less than 35% of calories from total sugars; and
o      Less than 200 mg sodium.
·      For beverages, we will choose water, low fat or fat free milk, 100% fruit juice, or low-sodium 100% vegetable juice.

Examples
·      Individual fruits—apples, pears, oranges.
·      Fruit cups packed in juice or water.
·      Vegetables—baby carrots, broccoli, edamame.
·      Dried fruits—raisins, apricots, cherries.
·      Low-fat, low-salt, whole-grain crackers or chips.
·      Whole-grain, low-sugar cereals.
·      100% whole-grain mini bagels.
·      8-oz servings of low-fat, fruit-flavored yogurt with less than 30 g of total sugars.
·      8-oz servings of low-fat or nonfat chocolate or strawberry milk with less than 22 g of total sugars.
·      Low-sodium, whole-grain bars
Examples of Items that Do Not Meet the Standards
·      Potato chips or pretzels with too much sugar or salt (i.e., exceeding the values listed above).
·      Cheese crackers with too much fat or sodium.
·      Breakfast or granola bars with too much fat or sugar.
·      Ice cream products with too much fat or sugar.
·      Cake, cupcakes, or cookies with too much sugar or salt.
·      Fortified sports drinks or fortified water.
·      Gum, licorice, or candy.
·      Fruit smoothies with added sugar.
·      Regular colas or sodas with sugar or caffeine.

Birthday Celebrations:  The teacher will select which option a classroom follows:
·      Option 1: On a student’s birthday, the class can celebrate with non-food items such as a certificate or special privileges for the day.
·      Option 2: Classrooms can have monthly celebrations, scheduled by the teacher, for all the students with a birthday in that month.

Food Rewards: We will not use food as a student reward unless it is a necessary and integral part of the curriculum.

Open House - Wednesday October 3rd

Good Afternoon,

I wanted to remind you about our Open House on Oct 3, beginning at 6:30 pm.  I have attached the schedule for the evening for your review.  Your son or daughter will have listed room numbers on a similar schedule in Advisory today.  The schedule with classroom numbers is being held by your son or daughters Advisor.  Before leaving for Open-House please ask your son or daughter for their Advisory room number.   When you arrive at school you will report to the Advisory period and receive the schedule.  OR, you may print out the schedule from the attachment and sit down with your son or daughter (and Powerschool if needed) and ask them to list room numbers and advisory number on your schedule as a back-up.

Looking forward to a great turnout!
