Mid-term and Final Summative Assessment Schedule

Alternative Intersession Proposals:

All Alternative Intersession proposals should be written and presented to Mr. Hagen by
January 13th, 2012. You may find guidance on writing the proposal in the Student/Parent
Handbook which can be found on-line on the school web page.
January 4th- BHS Course Selection Information Night for 8th Grade Parents.
Parents of
January 5th- BHS Course Selection Night for Parent of 9th-11th Grade
January 17th- BHS Principal's Coffee at 7:00pm in the school library. For Parents of
9th and 10th Graders: "The IB Diploma" If you are interested in your son or daughter
securing an IB diploma, the IB Coordinator will provide a brief overview and be
available to answer questions.

Counseling News: Below are some important date and events of which you should be
aware.

Jan. 4 - During Advisory and Block 3, Counselors will be in the library
conference room available for student scheduling requests for
second semester electives.

Jan. 9 - Parent portal opens for course selection

Weeks of Jan. 10 through Jan 20, BHS counselors visit RAL pods to give
brief informational sessions about scheduling.

Jan. 12 - Representatives from NHHEAF will be visiting BHS to assist
families in completing the FAFSA form by appointment from
3pm-8pm. Availability is limited and a sign up sheet will be posted in the
Counseling office beginning Tuesday 1/3. More information will
be sent to students and parents via Naviance.

Jan 20 - Course selections due, parent portal closes.

News from Counseling


A couple of exciting notes from the BHS Counseling Department;

Financial Aid Information Night:

To date, nearly 60% of Bedford High School Seniors have submitted their applications to
colleges and universities across the country! The question now is...HOW DO YOU PAY
FOR IT?

Join the BHS Counseling Department and NHHEAF (New Hampshire Higher Education
Assistance Foundation)this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm for Financial Aid Information
Night. The presentation will be held in the theater and help answer your questions about
scholarships, grants, how to apply for financial aid, deadlines and many other topics.
For those unable to attend, NHHEAF offers free webinars for parents and students who
miss their school's Financial Aid night presentations.
There are two upcoming webinars:

Office Hours:

Has your student told you about BHS Counseling Office Hours yet? They will! Each
Thursday during block three, the counseling office has open office hours for students to
come down and visit with their counselor, get information and updates, or just say hello!
No appointment is necessary for students during this time and wen encourage all students
to stop in and visit with their counselors.

PSAT Results:

Counselors will be distributing PSAT results starting this week. Junior students will have
the opportunity to get their results tomorrow after their class meeting. Sophomore
students will be meeting in small groups with their counselor to discuss what the scoring
and next steps.

Intersession News

1) Deposits of 10% for Intersession are due by December 13th to Mr. Jozokos'
Office. Students are welcome to deposit more than the 10%; that is the
minimum. Students who do not pay the deposit will be removed from the activity
in order to make room for students on wait lists.

2) Add/Drop period from Dec. 7 - Dec 13. This is primarily for students who
missed the sign-ups first time around. Students can also change their present
Intersession activity. Add/drop will happen through the Intersession sign-up
portal.

3) Mandatory Intersession meetings will take place during school
on December 14th for all students. Meeting rooms are announced in the
Intersession activity web page.

SEMI-FORMAL Dance

The students will hear the following information from me in a class meeting
this week regarding attendance at the semi-formal dance.
The dance runs from 7 to 10 p.m.
Students must arrive by 8:00 p.m.
Appropriate dress is required. The school dress code will be enforced.
Appropriate dancing is required. Any couples grinding will be asked to leave
the dance. No refunds. You will be informed.
If a student brings a guest from another school, the BHS student is responsible
for the guest’s behavior.
As always all other school rules apply at this school function.

IB Information Course Selection Night


Tonight there will be an IB Course selection informational session in the BHS Theater
From 7:00 to 8:30. This is for Junior and Sophomore students and parents who have
specific questions about IB courses or general questions about the IB Program. If you are
unable to attend please contact Bedford's IB Coordinator at gagnonp@sau25.net with any
questions you may have or to set up an individual meeting.

Good Afternoon!

It was an incredibly exciting weekend and I want to congratulate the many student
performers and athletes that brought our Fall season to such an exciting conclusion.
From the performers in the Musical and the musicians who not only played in the
pit for the musical, but also competed at All-State competition and played at halftime,
to our football team's first experience in a State championship it was certainly
a time to be proud to be a Bulldog!!
As we headed into one of my favorite holidays, I hope you are all able to be with
family and friends on this Thanksgiving Day and take time to appreciate all that
you have in your lives.

BHS: Intersession sign ups for Juniors & Sophomores
Juniors will be able to sign up until about 8 o'clock tonight.
Sophomores will be able to sign up starting the evening of November
28th (likely around 8).

FYI Teacher Workshop Day


FYI

On the school calendar you will see a Teacher Workshop day scheduled for February 14.
The workshop day is scheduled to coincide with the Primary Election. This date is
subject to change and will be determined when New Hampshire sets its Primary Election
date. It is possible the Primary could be as early December or January. Whenever it is
finally scheduled, that will be the day the district schedules the Teacher Workshop day.
I realize it is a bit early, but I wanted you to have early notice in the event you might be
making plans.

Primary Election Update


Hi,

New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner has announced that the date for the NH
Presidential Primary will be Tuesday, January 10, 2012. We originally had this event
scheduled for February 14, 2012, the best information at the time, but noted that this date was
subject to change. As a result, there will be no school for students (Teachers will have a
professional develop day) on Tuesday, January 10 and Tuesday, February 14 will be a regular
school day.

Update Report Cards/PTC Wizard


Hi,

I hope that your power has been restored and that life is getting back to normal you and
your family. Let's hope this is not an indicator for the rest of the winter season! I want
to make you aware that we have adjusted our Report Card distribution date and the
closing date for the Parent Conference (PTC Wizard) window. The new dates are:
Report Cards will go home with students on - Thursday, November 10.
The PTC Wizard Parent Conference Window will remain open until midnight
   Saturday, November 5.

We realize that many of you will not have received Report Cards by your teacher
conference time. Grades will have been entered and verified by November 8, in
powerschool. The Parental Portal will re-open at that time so that many of you will be
able to see grades prior to your conference. For anyone whose conference is before the
opening of the Portal, teachers will be prepared to share quarter grades during your
meeting.

Let's hope for a school day tomorrow!

GRADES CLOSE
Just a reminder to look in PowerSchool for grades. Grades close on Oct. 28.
WINTER SPORTS SIGN-UPS
The Winter sports sign-ups will be held on Nov. 3. Check the school web-site for times
and location.

VETERAN'S DAY
Just a reminder that we do not have school on Nov. 11, Veteran's Day.

BHS FALL MUSICAL PRODUCTION
"Seusical" is coming to the BHS Theater from Nov. 17-19. The Fall production promises
to entertain. For more detail check the school web page.

BEDFORD CREW TEAM
On Sunday, nine student/athletes from Bedford High School will represent the Bedford
Crew Club and have the extraordinary opportunity to compete in rowing the Head of the
Charles Regatta in Boston. This is the "Super Bowl" of the rowing world, an event that
many rowers would love to experience but never have the opportunity.
The event is being held on Sunday and the team race goes off at 1:30 pm. Best of luck to
the team.

BHS: Share the Road Driving School - seats available
The October 31st driver education has seats available for students that
would like to sign up. Packets for driver education are located in the
Counseling Office. Deadline for sign ups for this class is October 24th.

Homecoming 10/15/11


Good Afternoon!

I mentioned in my last email that we are headed into "Home Coming Weekend"
The athletic schedule for Saturday is below. Also, note that our Marching Band and
Color Guard will be performing at half time of the football game.

As a way to build some tradition and additional spirit into the day, we
are extending the opportunity for families to participate in "Family
Tailgating" at BHS. This is intended to raise the energy and spirit of
the crowd in a positive way. To this end we have established some
requirements for anyone wishing to participate.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A HIGH SCHOOL EVENT!
ALCOHOL OF ANY TYPE IS PROHIBITED!

Violators will be subject to prosecution.

Please use the designated RAL lot on the far side of the school.
It will be identified with appropriate "Tailgate" signage. This
will be the only area open for this purpose for safety reasons.
(hot grills)
Small gas grills are permissible. (no open fires are permitted, no
charcoal grills because we do not have an area to dump hot coals)
The Tailgating area will open one and a half hours before the
game and close to 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
Please refrain from bringing in any glass items.
Please remember this is a Carry-in-Carry-out event. What ever
you bring in, we ask that you take out you.
Have fun and enjoy the game!

Good Morning!
NECAP TESTING
We will be concluding the NECAP testing on Wednesday and Thursday of this
week. Testing takes place during our morning blocks in the gymnasium. I am so
pleased at how focussed and serious our students are during testing.
SPIRIT WEEK
This is Spirit Week and a number of fun class competitions are planned over the
week. The week culminates in an old fashion school-wide pep rally and a tally of
class points to determine the most spirited class.
HOMECOMING WEEKEND
The Friday evening Harvest Dance kicks off Homecoming Weekend. The dance
is for Bedford High school students and their guests. Students wishing to bring a
guest must complete a Guest request form and gain approval from their Assistant
Principal in advance of the close of school on Friday. Guests must be of high
school age or a 2010 graduate of BHS. Forms may be found in the AP office.
PTG NEWS
The PTG is sponsoring two outstanding experiences for students at BHS. If you
are around the building please note the new sculptures (3 in the court yard). Last
week the PTG sponsored an Artist in Residence program and a number of
classes received direct instruction from artist Mark Ragonese. This year the
artistic medium used was driftwood. Additionally, through the generosity of the
PTG's ORK program, a "Poetry Out Loud" competition is being introduced to our
school. This unique program will train teachers of Humanities to bring poetry to
life. It will further promote a school-wide competition which may lead to
competition at the regional and State level. It is a great program and we thank
the PTG for their continued support. If you are not a member yet, please
consider joining!
The PTG has kicked off the MY COKE REWARDS program. Your routine
purchases of coke products can provide funds to our schools. For information on

COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING HELP
The Counseling office has partnered with Mrs. Lee Joyce of Bedford to offer free
assistance and advice to Senior students on composing their college essay. The
essay is an integral part of the college admission process, and is the sole
opportunity a student has to really, "put their fingerprint" on their college
application. Mrs. Joyce, a former Undergraduate Admissions Officer from St.
Anselm College has read over 5000 college essays and can offer valuable
perspective to students on standing out, capturing the attention of admissions
reps, and putting their best foot forward. Mrs. Joyce will be available to students
in a small group, and one-on-one sessions in the Counseling department.
Students who are interested can sign up in the Counseling office. Mrs. Joyce's
volunteer services will be available during most weeks Monday -Thursday from
11:45 - 2:30. Students are encouraged to sing up during their managed times, or
lunch blocks as needed.
PRINCIPAL'S COFFEE
My first principal's Coffee will be held on October 18th, in the BHS library
beginning at 7:00pm. The meeting is limited to the first fifteen respondents so
that everyone has a chance to be engaged in the conversation. The agenda for
the evening will be Open so bring your questions, concerns, and any positives
you might want to share. Meetings are planned for one hour. If you are
interested in attending please contact our PTG liaison Deb Delahunty at

Good Afternoon!

Senior Project:

I want to remind parents of Seniors that on Thursday evening Sept. 22, beginning at 7pm in the theater
we are holding a Senior Project Information Night. This will be an opportunity to hear about the
requirements and expectations of Senior Project.

Welcome Back Dance:
On Friday evening Sept. 23, we are hold a "Welcome Back" dance for all students. The dance is
sponsored by the Model UN club. It will begin at 7pm and end promptly at 10pm. The cost is $5.00
per student.

IB Information Night:
On Tuesday Sept. 27, we are holding an IB Information Night for Parents and students interested in the
program. It will begin at 7pm and will be held in the theater.

Advisory Grade Entry:
Because Advisory is now a once per week meeting, the expectation for the input of grades for Advisory will be different than a typical course. Teachers will enter grades at the the quarter mark and again at the three quarter mark in every marking period. This will give parents an opportunity to address any issues with participation in Advisory by a son or daughter in advance of the report card grade.
I enjoyed seeing and talking with so many of you at Open House. The staff also appreciated the many
positive emails they received! Thanks for taking the time to write!

Open House 9/15/11



Good Afternoon,


This is a reminder that Open House is Thursday evening
beginning at 6:30. (Sorry for the confusion last week!) Parents
are asked to print your son(s) or daughter(s) schedules at home
and bring them with you to Open House. Upon arrival please
report directly to your son(s) or daughter(s) Advisory at 6:30.
(This is different from last year). You will find the room number
for Advisory on the schedule. If you have difficulty locating it,
we will have lists of students with their Advisory room numbers
at each entrance We will run an alternating red/silver period
schedule (see attached and below ). During the evening we
will use the intercom to direct class changes. We will be
posting signs around the building and will have some of our
NHS students available to help you navigate the building. If for
some reason you can not print a schedule at home, please
come by a bit early and schedules may be printed in the
Counseling office.

Principal's Newsletter 9/9/11


Happy Friday,

Today we observed the 10th Anniversary of September 11th. Teachers and students in
our Humanities classes engaged in a special lesson about 9/11 that was very powerful.
We also held a formal rally in which the entire campus, BHS and RAL, joined with
representatives from the local Fire and Police departments to observe the anniversary and
to be sure that we never forget! I have to report that the young people in this community
continue to impress us. I wish that the entire community could have witnessed the
reverent, respectful, and genuine manner in which the students participated in the event.
Close to 2500 people filed out of the building and stood together in the circle area and
not sound could be heard throughout the ceremony. I am comforted to know that in my
old age, it will be these young people who will be leading our country!

PARKING LOTTERY (JUNIORS AND SENIORS ONLY)
We will be holding an additional parking lottery at the close of school on September
13th. Students interested in purchasing a parking pass (cost$110.00). You will need a
completed packet including copy of drivers license and registration, parking form, along
with the payment. Forms are on-line and available in the front office.

OPEN HOUSE
I also want to remind you that next Wednesday is Open House at BHS, beginning at 6:30
pm. Please download your son(s) and/or daughter(s) schedule from Powershool to use as
you make your way to their classes.

Drop/Add Window
September 15th will be the last day to drop or add a course. After that date courses may
nor be added. Courses may be dropped, but will be recorded on a student transcript with
either a WP (withdrawn passing or WF(withdrawn failing) depending on the students
grade at the time of withdrawal. Please talk with your son or daughters counselor.

ATHLETIC NEWS
Our sports teams are in full swing making for some exciting afternoon and evening
activities! Even if you do not have someone involved on a team, come out and be part of
the "Bulldog Pride!" On a related sporting note, last year our school was selected to
receive the NHIAA (New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association) Sportsmanship
Award for Schools in our division. Mr. Whitmore and I will be present with a banner
later this month that we will proudly hang in our school!
